Comment: Why is MadWorld bombing at retail?

Monday, 30 Mar 2009 14:43
MadWorld
MadWorld has failed to set the UK gaming charts alight, which suggests that violent adult games aren't what Wii gamers want.

MadWorld debuted at a sorry 34th in the UK All Format's Chart and this week dropped off the radar and out of the top forty. The question is, why has Platinum Games' black and white masterpiece performed so poorly?

When we asked PlatinumGames' producer Atshushi Inaba whether he felt that the team were taking too many risks with MadWorld, he replied:

"Sure, there are definitely risks involved with any game but we're confident the game will be successful. We chose to develop on the Wii because it’s currently the most popular console in the world and it isn't just a family console, it's played by a huge amount of people of all ages, from small children through to adults and even grandparents.

"There also aren't a huge amount of adult titles out there on Wii so we thought we’d make a game to tap into this audience. We’re confident that the game will be successful but only time will tell."

Time seems to be telling (at least in this country) that the risks just didn't pay off. The game doesn't appear to be attracting the mass of Wii gamers it was expected to.

This really is a shame, since MadWorld is a game that's not only visually unique but also shows the Nintendo Wii's motion controls at their best. Our very own Ian Dunt had this to say about the game in his review:

"You won't be getting bored of this one anytime soon. You will be laughing yourself to sleep with glee and you will find yourself brimming with respect for the tender loving care that's been put into the package."

So would MadWorld have sold better if it had released on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360? In retrospect, most likely. The demographic that appears to be lacking in the Wii audience is present on the Microsoft and Sony consoles. The thing is, the game wouldn't be nearly as good on these "next-generation" boxes, since half of the game's enjoyment is in its controls. Moreover, the game's development costs would have been much higher.

Is this the end of adult-only games on the Nintendo Wii? It's certainly possible that publishers, especially SEGA, are watching the performance of MadWorld and concluding that they won't take the risk again: instead they'll release top selling games like Sonic and Mario at the Olympics.

Then again, House of the Dead: Overkill (also published by SEGA) performed relatively well at retail, debuting at number fifteen and even managing to retain that spot one week later. Moreover, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars is doing very well for the Nintendo DS, despite it being the handheld's very first 18+ game.

Could MadWorld's performance be due to its bad press? It was reported to have made the Nintendo Wii family unfriendly. Or could the sales be blamed on the fact that it's too gruesome for an efficient advertising campaign? Maybe Wii purchasers who would have bought MadWorld gave up on adult Wii games and sold their console already.

Whatever the reasons, I implore you to buy MadWorld, since I know it'd be right up your street.

Why do you think MadWorld isn't doing very well? If you bought the game, what do you think of it?

  • "I'm not sure we'll know how well it did for at least 6 months to a year. The Wii sales performance is different than the 360 or PS3. It doesn't have the giant opening week followed by dead silence. Games start slow and through word of mouth tend to grow. That being said, Madworld was never likely to succeed, very few highly stylized games have sold well, on any platform, particularly in niche markets like brawlers. Look at Clover Studios Godhand, a reasonable comparison on PS2. It was a very similar game and did very poorly. Publishers need reasonable expectations when they adventurous outside the standard 3-4 genres popular with hardcore gamers."

  • "Well i think its far too violent. I like Core games but this is not one for me. Rather have RE5 or the Conduit."

  • "The Wii completely abandoned the demographic that likes this genre long, long ago. It's no surprise that an ultra-violent game released on a system that showcases infinite amounts of shovelware like Nintendogs and Party Babies has failed. Had this been released on the Xbox 360 it probably would have enjoyed moderate success."

  • ""The Wii completely abandoned the demographic that likes this genre long, long ago." No. Simply No. The Wii never catered to this crowd to begin with. The Wii as a platform was designed to be approachable by literally everyone. It doesn't target certain niches. Yes, it has shovelware. It has party babies. It has mini games. But it also has great sports games, racing games, platformers, shooters, adventure games, sims, etc. It has everything. Maybe you like the games maybe you don't, but it's not the hardware. Its the developers. Nintendo is pumping out its usual, hig quality, high fun-factor games. Third parties are pumping out the cash ins. It's going to take some time and some high quality third party titles to convince customers that not all third party games are shovelware. You and I both know that if you grab a game off the Wii shelf at Target or Walmart, its more likely than not to be garbage. This needs to change before a title like Madworld can really shine. Even so, a game like Madworld is incredibly niche, as I mentioned in my last post. Similar games have done just as poorly on PS3, Xbox and even the almighty PS2. So this comment is also nonsense, "Had this been released on the Xbox 360 it probably would have enjoyed moderate success." Sorry, just not true."

  • "Doesn't surprise me at all, in fact it would be interesting to know what numbers they thought they would sell, which is what would have informed their business decision to make such a title. Even on Xbox or PS3 this would be a niche title: a brawling game -> with excessive gore -> with stylised graphics. On Wii, it's inside another niche, the small adult gamer market on that platform. Doesn't take a genius to realise that's a small number of customers you're aiming at."

  • "I am pretty hardcore PC gamer with the a better than XBOX 360 level rig. At the moment I rack up hours with L4D. Hours waiting for games to start, friends to all be able to join, people not to quit when they are losing. :-) I would never exchange keyboard and mouse for a gamepad. But I have just bought a Wii after seeing a number of appealing adult games on the system. What i want from a console is pure quick and easy fun. The Wii delivers. So does my Dreamcast and arcade sticks. Both Madworld and Overdose have had me grinning ear to ear. Sure the Wii isn't a serious ultra HD gaming machine. That's what the PC is for!"
