Sony has announced that PhyreEngine 3.0 will support releases on the forthcoming Next Generation Portable (NGP) Playstation handheld.

The technology offers a cross-platform game engine and tools that are provided under a unique licence, enabling it to be utilised by Playstation 3 developers as well as Tools and Middleware licensees.

Teiji Yutaka, senior vice-president of the technology platform of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, said: "We're very happy to see the popularity of PhyreEngine with the global game developer community.

"It has helped demonstrate our commitment to the game developer community and in particular enable smaller independent developers and publishers to flourish."

PhyreEngine has been used to run more than 50 games for a selection of platforms across the globe.

Recently, Vicious Cycle Software also announced that its Vicious Engine 2 will be able to support Sony's NGP.

The company's technology has previously powered titles games such as Disney's Despicable Me.
