Since launching in Europe and North America last week, Sony has sold 1.2 million PlayStation Vitas.
Overall sales now stand at 2 million and, while still a long way short of the number of 3DS consoles sold by Nintendo, Sony will be encouraged by these figures given that the Vita had such a slow start in Japan.
According to estimates by the Metro, 621,188 Vitas have been sold outside Japan in the past week and Andrew House, the boss of Sony Computer Entertainment, expressed his delight at the numbers.
"[The] Vita was designed to deliver the ultimate portable entertainment experience, and we couldn’t be more thrilled with the reaction we’re seeing from consumers and the pace at which PS Vita is selling," he said.
A good start for the Vita in Europe was much needed for Sony given that its arch rival Nintendo recently announced that the 3DS had become the fastest selling console ever in Japan.
