Versus XIII cancellation rumours a fantasy?

Rumours that the long overdue Final Fantasy Versus XIII game has been cancelled are premature, according to a tweet from Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada.
Wada conducts all his Twitter posts in Japanese but, according to a translation by Andriasang, the games boss denied a cancellation had occurred and said he had in fact just left a project meeting concerning Versus.
It is perhaps unsurprising that people looking in from the outside are beginning to wonder if the game will ever see the light of day given that its trailer first made an appearance at E3 2006.
At this rate, by the time the game is finished, PlayStation might have actually brought out a new console. Versus is also in danger of ending up like Duke Nukem Forever - a game that literally took forever to come out but didn't impress the critics when it finally arrived.
Despite Wada's rebuttal, Square Enix as a company is hardly being forthcoming with information and confidence-boosting sentiment.
"We have no information on the status of Final Fantasy Versus XIII, but will be sure to update you as it becomes available," it told Kotaku when asked if Versus is still in development.
Kotaku was following up on the allegations of several of its sources, who informed it about the alleged collapse of Versus.
If the game has indeed been cancelled, there is also the issue of whether the material would simply be rebranded to form content for a Final Fantasy XV, as has also been rumoured, or canned altogether, which would be a bit of a waste.
However, until Square Enix wants to produce something concrete, such as a release date, it is unlikely that a few vague tweets from Wada are going to stop the rumour mill from churning.
But then that's all part of the fun of the games industry isn't it?
