Fifa 13 has become the fastest selling sports game of all time, racking up 4.5 million worldwide sales in just five days.
EA’s sporting masterpiece has been hailed as ‘the best and most realistic football game ever’ by critics, and fans seem to be in agreement. The game has been flying off the shelves - selling one million copies in just 36 hours - making it the biggest UK videogame launch of the year.
According to EA it’s not just sales that are going through the roof; Fifa’s creators said that on Sunday afternoon around 800,000 people were playing online – making it EA’s busiest gaming day in history. The company said this amounted to 66 million online game sessions already played, as Fifa fans set about taking their Ultimate Team to the top of the world rankings.
“Fifa 13 is the biggest and best sports game we have ever created”, said Andrew Wilson, executive vice president of EA Sports.
Fifa 13’s gameplay has received a few tweaks this year, pleasing fans across the globe. Features such as First Touch Control ensure that every match plays out differently, as player’s reactions change to match their environment.
There is also the edition of Match Day, which connects player form and availability to real world leagues; meaning a suspended John Terry will also be unavailable for the same period on the game.
For EA, the accolade of the biggest video game launch of the year could be short lived, however, with the launch of Activision’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 due at the end of November. The game received a fantastic reception at this year’s Eurogamer Expo as fans queued for in excess of two hours to get their hands on a controller and take the first person shooter, which revolutionised online gaming, for a test run.
However, Wilson remains confident about Fifa 13’s ongoing success, which he claims is ‘unprecedented in sports entertainment’.
Potential buyers of the game can still put it through its paces on the demo, available through the PlayStation Network, Xbox LIVE and Origin.
Fifa 13 is also available on the PS2, PSP, PS Vita, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo 3DS and DS and as a download on iPod touch, iPhone and iPad. The Nintendo Wii U version will be released on November 18.
