85% PS3 Gamers Online: Only 60% Xbox 360 Gamers?

Thursday, 08 Jan 2009 20:41
PlayStation Network
Being free comes with certain advantages. Approximately 85% of PlayStation 3 gamers are online, in comparison to only 60% of Xbox 360 gamers.*

That's according to our final stats from Sony's CES conference. Kaz Hirai announced that there are 17 million active accounts on the PlayStation network, with 330 million pieces of content downloaded. Apparently 2.1 million PSN accounts were added in the last month alone.

Microsoft already revealed that its praised Xbox Live service now has 17 million active members. Despite having 28 million consoles in homes* this is the same amount of members online as Sony's PlayStation Network.

That's the advantage of being free and as shown by the amount of money made via PlayStation Home goods already, Sony can still be profitable.

*According to sale through numbers released by Microsoft.

[UPDATE] - We are aware that PSN users have multiple accounts, in order to download content from regional stores, thus the percentages depend on Sony's methodology of gathering the statistics. If PSP users are also included, the percentage will be significantly reduced.

  • "You do know that that includes PSP owners as well right?"

  • "This number also includes PSP users and possibly PS2 users subscribed to the service, not just PS3 users."

    Nope (....) Posted: 08/01/2009 22:53:09

  • "Well, this is a no brainer! It's obvious that the $100 Xbox Wifi is the culprit. Oh wait! You don't need Wifi to get online! Ooops! Hmmm... About $4 a month for Live? . . . . . .

Anyway, seriously now. Let's not forget that “some 55 percent of all adult Americans now have a high-speed internet connection, or a broadband connection, in their home, according to the report, ‘Home Broadband Adoption 2008.’” Do you think there's a relation?"

  • "Few problems this is psn ids across ps and ps3 and you calculation that every one of those ids is for a separate ps3 is way off, i have 4 myself one for uk, japan, usa and hk"

  • "soooooo...what you're saying is that you acknowledge that the numbers are BS and you're reporting it anyway?"

  • "Hmmm... i dunno. Still needs more cowbell."

  • "1, PS2 users don't use PSN, why would they? what for?
2, I think the number would be higher is they used Playstation.com accounts, a lot higher
3, PSP account's is likely, but anybody with both PSP & PS3 has the same account, as the systems are paired.
But multiple accounts are a real possibility, but do ya really think everyone knows they can do it?"

    TGO (UK) Posted: 11/01/2009 02:57:17

  • "the same can be said about XBL users I have 3 accounts on 360. I know quite a few people who have more than one account."

  • "This could also be down to the fact that PS offere their service for free and have wifi integrated out of the box. MS took this out to cut corners and save money which is obviously going to affect take up rates as people don;t live having to fork out for more hardware. Still even with a £39.99 a year membership your still buying into a superior experience with Xbox live and with the next console they should learn from their mistakes."
