DirectX 11 will be compatible with DirectX 10 and 10.1 cards, thankfully
It seems like DirectX 10 has only just started to be used in any meaningful way and yet Microsoft has just unveiled its successor.
DirectX 11 had the lid lifted on it at Microsoft's Gamefest 2008 event in Seattle last night, where the company said it will introduce new shader technology.
This will "[lay] the groundwork for the GPU to be used for more than just 3D graphics, so that developers can take advantage of the graphics card as a parallel processor".
Microsoft also revealed DX11 will feature multi-threaded resource handling to exploit multi-core machines, support for tessellation and full Vista support.
Of most interest to the majority of PC gamers will be the fact that DX10 and DX10.1 hardware will support DX11.
There is currently no release date for DirectX 11, but stay tuned to Gamezine for the latest when it arrives.
