Mario Kart Wii runs over all opposition
Tuesday, 15 Apr 2008 12:34
Mario Kart will probably be top for a long time
Mario and Sonic have a new challenger for their top spot, in the form of Mario Kart Wii. Yes, the only miniature Italian plumber ever to knock himself off the top of the charts has fired a red turtle shell into the exhaust pipe of his Olympian counterpart, taking top spot with a record opening week of sales.
The Olympics-based cartoon fun-fest failed to see off its vehicularly-oriented opponent and it is difficult to see how any other title could dislodge Mario Kart Wii in the near future.
Elsewhere, it was business as usual. A little bit of movement from last week's contenders (mainly downwards, due to Mario Kart's entry). Pro Evo 2008 remained steady at three, Guitar Hero III slipped one place to sixth and Viking: Battle for Asgard slipped five places to 11th.
Mario Kart DS also made an appearance in the lower reaches, climbing from 27th to 19th this week. Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga scraped back in with a 20th place finish, while Bully, the Simpsons Game and Need for Speed: ProStreet slipped back into the unwelcome depths of chart obscurity.
And yes, Cooking Mama 2 is still in the top 20.
