Microsoft's apology for Vista - Windows 7 for FREE

Monday, 19 Jan 2009 16:49
Windows 7
Microsoft will give out Windows 7 for free to Windows Vista customers by way of an apology.

Microsoft's Vista operating system might not have been the disaster everyone made it out to be, but it was certainly a big PR disaster for the company.

Microsoft jumped back to the design board to create a new operating system and are now willing to give away Windows 7 for free to those who bought Vista with a new computer within a certain period of purchase.

Known as the Microsoft Windows 7 Upgrade Program, or the Windows 7 Technical Guarantee Program, it intends to assist Microsoft's OEM partners in minimising the number of users who might postpone the purchase a new computer because of Windows 7's imminent release.

In order to do this, Microsoft propose that their partners provide a free upgrade to users (both individual and small businesses) who qualify.

The catch? It's only available to users who bought a PC with pre-installed Vista within the Program Eligibility Period. From what we know, this period begins from July 1st 2009. So yes, it's not for all Vista users.

Also note, the program is optional. OEMs are free not to participate and so can determine how best to provide end users with Windows 7. So perhaps this isn't an apology, but simply good business sense? Microsoft aren't a company to admit failure.

  • "I'm not sure this is Microsoft "apologising"- it's just what these companies do. Apple did the same when Leopard was released and MS themselves did a programme of free Vista upgrades from XP during a certain period."

  • "Thanks for the comment Sam. That's exactly an option we mention at the conclusion of the article. "

  • "July 1st 2009! What about the rest of us who put up with all the Vista crap from the beginning i.e. the unnecessary cost and headaches of replacing incompatible software and hardware. If that is the case, Microsoft can go to hell!"

  • "I think they should at least give a break to all of us who shelled out big $$$ for the not so ultimate version"

  • "how is this MS apologizing? They would have to give a free upgrade to all Vista users if it were that. Its nothing more than keeping their channels partners happy and more of the same who cares about the end-user attitude we've seen from MS for years now. "

  • "Hardly an apology if it's intended to be that. Those that experienced problems were OEM builders and those who brought the PC before Serive Pack 1. Last I checked all PCs today, let alone 1/7/09 onwards all have SP1."

  • "I was really disappointed to know that I missed the Windows 7 upgrade. I purchased a new computer May 25, 2009 after my computer went out. I am very disappointed in Vista and can't seem to do what I did with the old one. Now I will have to live with this one until I can afford to do an upgrade. I feel that there should not been limitations on replacements. My budget does not allow me to make the necessary adjustments so what are my choices. None."

  • "I'll say it...That's crap. I've been putting up with Vista for 2 flipping years. Thinking about a MAC. Some apology"

  • "i am out of the purchase period. therefore, i am getting a mac. f*** windows, f*** vista."
