$1 Million Goods Sold in PlayStation Home

Sony doesn't need to charge for its online services, PlayStation Home makes $1 million from in-game goods.

That's right, Sony's service hasn't been out for long, but it's already made Sony $1 million from the priced goods available.

T-Shirts, furniture and plants have all been enough to cause PlayStation 3 gamers to open their wallets. Intriguing that the "nickle and diming" tactic has already worked.

According to Kaz Hirai at Sony's CES conference, 3.4 million people have downloaded the PlayStation Home Open Beta. Plenty of people to spend some pennies (in the monetary sense, not the urinating sense.)

What have you done folks? Spending money in Home!? It's meant to be free! Stop encouraging them! I don't think this was what was meant when Bethesda said it could be the industry's defining moment.

  • "it IS free. don't buy stuff if you don't want to."

  • "Why are you discouraging this? The fact that Sony has earned such a great profit from this only seals the future of Home and it's production, especially given that many offices from Sony were recently shut down or scheduled to shut down...thousands lost their jobs due to this and there're roumers of more jobs being lost. It's a money thing man, but I think this item thing is brilliant. No, I don't agree with 2 BUCKS for a shirt... that's a bit extreme, but if Sony's yielding a good enough profit, I say, that's GREAT! More rewards coming from Home in the future far as I can tell!"

  • "Way to be objective there, Patrick. We can spend our money however we like. Yeah, Home's free, but it doesn't hurt to support the service and ensure better content in future updates. We get enough bashing on Home's own forums."

  • "I think that what Sony has done is rather quite clever. By making access to their services free it opens up people's minds to buy more.

The way I see it is that Microsoft has turned off a certain percent of potential buyers of their online market by charging them an "entrance fee." Yeah its a small price per year* month* or every 3 months* but its still turning people away from it. Since Microsoft is trying to bring both PS Home and the "Mii's" to their system at once it only makes sense that they make the clothes free. Since people are already paying just to have those avatars. Home is free for anyone to access and sure it may cost up to a dollar or two to get some different clothes but remember: the core service is free. And that core service isn't found on Microsoft's platform.

Will I buy some digital clothes? No but I am sure someone else will. Ever since the day came where people on Diablo 2 started selling rare items and gold for money I really don't see how this is any different.

I haven't heard anyone complain about it until I saw this so I think Sony is doing just fine with this."

  • "Thanks for your comments folks. The article was written in jest more than anything else. I personally think the pricing is a little over the top - a T-Shirt shouldn't cost more than 50p IMO. As you should know, Gamezine defended Home from TIME Magazine, at the result of them editing their article. Thank you for your time."
