God of War 3, Killzone 2, Uncharted 2 at GDC '09

Among Thieves
More anticipated games to be at 2009's Game Developer's Conference.

We reported that the sequel to an Xbox 360 classic, Mass Effect, would appear at GDC '09 and now the PlayStation has its fair share of sequels too.

Naughty Dog's Uncharted 2: Among Thieves will make an appearance, perhaps letting us in on how the team has achieved real-time graphics as impressive as the footage already released.

The talk given will explore Naughty Dog's state scripting system and how it's applied to real gameplay programming in their latest Uncharted instalment.

The PlayStation 3 debut of God of War will also appear at the San Francisco conference. Set to be an interesting exploration of the developer's usage of the PS3's SPU and how others can get in on the act, the listing describes the session;

"This talk will discuss systems like core rendering, file IO and collision. We will focus on simplicity and ease of use. Architectural tips for scaling and debugging will be covered as well as portability issues and compromises."

Killzone 2, which will already have been released, will feature in two talks. The first will describe the game's usage of the Cell's SPUs, which have been implemented for the game's AI, image- based post-processing (motion blur, depth of field, bloom) and other graphical algorithms.

The second session will look at Killzone 2's rendering, especially with regards to the lighting and shadowing techniques performed in the game's deferred shading engine.

It looks like Sony and their first party PlayStation 3 developers are hoping to impart their in-depth knowledge of the big black box and help other developers with their future game optimisation.

  • "Oh man.... that will be boring as hell.... all those crappy games will just be a waste of time and space, why they don't leave to the real pros like the 360 devs hog all the time? my heroes from valve already said the POS3 was a waste of time, every body should learn from them because the 360 runs nuclear plants and won wars at the other evil country and create cities, pity the Sony crap boys are just a bunch of terrorists and black people, not superior like us the 360 users

  • "I'm very happy to read this article. As a lot of people hoped, the PS3 seems to have more power in it than there was shown right know. Apparently it's difficult to unleash this power, but if the game developers work together and share their knowledge, there's a chance to tease out some brilliant games in the future. Guerrilla games for example finally achieved something that was a problem of the PlayStation brand since the beginning: Full screen anti-aliasing. And simultaneously, there are multiple light sources (over 200!) and a great amount of other effects. If they can share only this, the future looks very bright for PlayStation fans (like me)!
