Rumour: PS2 Emulator Coming to PlayStation 3

PlayStation 3 in London
Could a PlayStation 2 software emulator be coming to all PlayStation 3's in the near future?

Yes we know your launch PlayStation 3 plays PlayStation 2 games. Good for you. However, with a necessary chip missing from recent models, the rest of us are left in the lurch.

So here comes the rumour that Sony is looking into the problem. In order to keep the PS3's price down the originally included PS2 chips were cut out (look here to see the reformed PS3 board), so the only solution is to develop software emulation. Reportedly anyone who's up to the challenge can enter the frame.

The rumour comes from NeoGAF member Meph who recounts what was told to him by a Sony representative (openly described as a 'tool'). The story goes that Sony might be willing to buy a PlayStation 2 emulator for the future.

"He mentioned that since the PS2 has just 1 year left on its life-cycle not to expect them to develop anything new with regards to backwards compatibility," says Meph.

"He then leans in and lowers his voice, as if to tell me some deep dark secret and mentions that Sony may be willing to potentially buy a PS2 emulator to put in future consoles."

According to Meph this similarly happened with PlayStation 1 backwards compatibility in the PlayStation 2.

How exactly an independent coder could create a PlayStation 2 emulator without a PlayStation 3 development kit, we're unawares, but intriguing nonetheless.

  • "Small little problem that might just throw most of what written above straight out the window. the only PS3 with the emotion chip was the ntsc version the others used..shock horror software emulation. so why please tell me why!! would sony pay for something they already have. admitedly the compatibilty is supposedly low (only 50-60%) but i own a PS3 with no Emo-chip and i can promise you ps2 games are not a problem for it enfact ive yet to find a incompatible game dispite the so clled low compatibilty the emulated PS2 compatibility has. so "gamezine" go back to what ever you used to do a gamin site that does know ps3 already hd emulation is a gaming site so outa date its laughable"

  • "Barry,

I'm afraid your cylinders are misfiring. We know that early US models don't need software emulation and latters do. Launch Euro models feature one PS2 chip (compared to the US two PS2 chips) meaning that they use a part hardware and part software solution (to about a 90% success rate). Current models play NO PS2 games, none, nudda, because they feature NO PS2 hardware. The part software emulation now does not work. Sony needs FULL software emulation to let current PS3's play PS2 games, and previous evidence showed that the company was not interested in the providing the option at all. We hope that information helps you."

  • "naaaa. i think you right on the PS2 emulator for the new PS3's but sony dont need to buy it. in Europe the omitted the chip of the launch and set it bak to poot emulation for PS2 in so sony dont nead to buy or make one they have one.

when the PS2 dies they will launch the PS2 as a update. "

  • "Sorry if i jumped the gun i only went by the years and years of reputable sites talking about only one chip as im niether a PS3 hardware designer or a gamingsite and as ive never heard of two chip i cant says its wrong or right perhaps this is true. however this rumour is still never going to happen as you admited they have part emulation at the very least the only chip that they would take out apart from an emotion chip would be a chip with limited power and just a number cruncher (technically all chips are but this one would be fiarly outdated and easy to emulate). bein a programmer i know that for sony to make a emulated version of number chrunchers a abit of memory redirection maybe would be relitively simple and as the playstation team are the most experience in the cell processor and its programming techniques they should be able to do it with very good results in no time at all. so i stay with my original comment why would the buy something they already have..(part of at least) they they could update quickly, easily, cheaply and reliably to get a copy from someone else theres also the issue of as you stated the sdk but that wouldnt be hard to get if you wanted it i had the ps2 sdk for fun once wasnt newhere near experience enough to use it mind. but sony wouldnt want other peoples software running on there OS unless its a mainsteam company which would there for charge stupid money to sony for it take longer to make it and probably get it wrong so it would be cheaper for sony to do it themselves. what next "rumour sony asks atari games developers to patch PS3 proccesor bug cause they cant be bothered too" yeh right!"
