WiiWare launched today in the US

Monday, 12 May 2008 13:01
WiiWare will be coming to Europe soon, fret ye not
Nintendo's WiiWare service, hailed as the Japanese company's answer to Xbox Live Arcade, will start offering original, downloadable titles from independent and established developers from today in the US.

Six titles will be made available at launch (there were nine in Japan), with new titles added each Monday. Games can be found in the WiiWare section of the Wii Shop channel.

To get them, users need to redeem Wii Points bought from the Wii Shop channel or retail outlets.

After playing for an hour, gamers will have the ability to rate the title they are playing on the newly launched Nintendo Channel, with results being published on an ongoing basis.

"WiiWare is to the videogame industry what independent films are to Hollywood," enthused Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of sales and marketing.

"WiiWare lets developers experiment with new ideas and experiences. Combined with our collection of classic Virtual Console games, Wii provides one-stop shopping for the greatest games of the past - and the future."

Titles available at launch will be:

  • Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King

  • LostWinds

  • Defend your Castle

  • Pop

  • VIP Casino: Blackjack

  • TV Show King

WiiWare will launch in Europe on May 20th.
