Rumour: Project Phoenix (Xbox 720) and the X-Engine

Thursday, 25 Jun 2009 17:32
Pheonix
Microsoft's Project Phoenix, the code name for the next Xbox, could have something to do with the rumoured X-Engine.

Yesterday we brought you the rumour that Microsoft had not only sent out a new Xbox 360 development kit to developers, but had also included a new X-Engine to make the most out of the system.

We believe that it might be more accurate to describe Microsoft's X-Engine as a collection of powerful development tools, which would make the relation to Sony's PlayStation 3 Edge Tools more relevant, since we believe Microsoft's initiative won't be restrictive.

The significance of the development tools are still the same (if not more so) and we'll continue to refer to the project as Microsoft's X-Engine, since this appears to be what some developers refer to it as.

Today we bring you a little bit of speculation on Microsoft's Project Phoenix, or what many of you might have called the Xbox 720. The project's early technical specs have been sent out to select developers (who are then matching them on PC) and an interesting feature has been tested.

We're told that developer's have tested the running of Xbox 360 games on the Project Phoenix's technical specs with not only upscaling, but increased AA (anti-aliasing), increased AF (anastropic filtering), a higher framerate and generally improved performance. The potential is that the next Xbox will not only run Xbox 360 games, it will improve their performance and graphics (think the PS3's smoothing and filtering of PS2 games but to a much greater degree).

We're also told that the X-Engine (or what we believe to be a selection of powerful development tools) will also be used on Project Phoenix, meaning that developers will be able to start working on games for the next-generation Xbox much earlier and will achieve earlier gains.

  • "I think before you post information on these sites you actually research! Rumours suck!! What you are talking about here is nothing to do with a NEW Xbox, but in fact about the current one. It is to help with developments in Project Natal!"

  • "Amazing!"

  • "I agree in part to this, as I have been following the Xbox life since as early as 2000, and even as early as 2002 and late 2001, there was a 7 yr plan for the 1st-gens successor, with an extimated expendature of 6.2 bil. They are still well under that financial figure, and it included a paper called the X30 (if memory serves me) which spelt out the change from the 1st-gen console, which was onlyto have a short life span or 5 yrs, the fopllowing 360 (it was even code named that - and several other names way back then- would be surpased by the addition of a second tier of gaming console, more in line with Billgates idea (at the time - 2003) of a set-top-box that included all manner of motion control, and complete in-house entertainment hub. This would run alongside the current console justlike the Playstation PS2/PS3 marketing miodel, offering two distinct levels of involvement for the gamer or general public. The next motherboard is called Opus, which will be THE LAST 360 motherboard to use the single Gpu and CPU style. The following one, a new motherboard, but designed to run in existing cases and a new case is called Valhalla, and included a unified GPU and CPU and smaller waffer size for tha chipset. It's 'planned" introduction is late 2009 or early - mid 2010, at which time it would herald in a new wave of gaming styles and possibilities. This all fits in well with this news or information. Do not for one small moment think that the things that happen within a place such as Sony or Microsoft's gaming div just 'happen' over night. They all plane well into the future and the likely possibilities that could exisit then. Gamers muct get over this silly 5 yr cycle idea of consoles, as that is simply redicilious in todays rapidly advancing technology. Like it - or not, they must follow on with advances, or be left behind. They have ensure Natal is completely backward compatible with all 360's, thus knowing that it will be in use as a built in itenm in the floowing hardware, and as an optional stand alone item for all earlier 360's. Makes perfect business and logical sense. If you want any validation of this or some of the information, simply get Opening the Xbox or Xbox 360 Uncloaked by Dean Takahashi, two of the best books ever written on teh subject, and he was made privy to all internal memos, emails, meetings etc during both the xbox and the 360's early years. So his facts are straight off the meeting tables within MS Xbox-Div."

  • "Greig - We know, we wrote the original X-Engine story. Like the Cry Engine 3 is scalable to the next generation of consoles, the X-Engine is supposedly scalable to the Xbox 720. "

  • "yea but ps2 games on the ps3 look crap. i played gow2 on my ps3 and its ugly as hell thats why i kept my ps2"

  • "name: You are mistaken. PS2 games look better on the PS3. FACT. The problem is that they may not look as good on an HDTV. "

  • "it will probably be rushed into prodution like the 360 to make a few bucks and end screwing a lot of buyers just like when i bought a 360 and it didnt last 5 months, neither did the brand new replacement they sent me, then they told me to pay 100 bucks each time it breaks. so hopefully they dont do the same thing, and neither one died because of rrod."

  • "There should be a new XBOX released by 2012. It will have 1GB of DDR5 or DDR3. Either it will contain 1 ATI DX11 GPU or 2 360 GPUs in crossfire."

  • "Microsoft can expect a law suit against them for this, the X-Engine is already a game engine used in X games made by Ubisoft. I thought it was trademarked, but then again, this is Microsoft. They have no respect for other companies."

    Kev (Swansea) Posted: 07/09/2009 09:43:18

  • "The X-Engine isn't trademarked by Microsoft, it's simply what their internal teams have nicknamed the engine."
