360 sells more than Wii and DS in UK's 2009 [UPDATE]

Thursday, 02 Jul 2009 12:20
Xbox 360
The UK's current generation console installed base has topped 24 million, with the Xbox 360 selling the most out of all the video game consoles in 2009.

As of June 27th 2009, the current generation of consoles has sold more than 24 million units in the UK to date; up 8.4 million from 12 months ago.

The sales data comes from Gfk Charttrack and is reported by GamesIndustry.biz

The Nintendo DS has shown the biggest growth in the past 12 months, with a current install base of 9.1 million, up from 2.7 million from the same point last year. The addition of DSi sales since its launch in April puts the handheld at 9.4 million sold.

The Nintendo Wii follows with a total of 5.4 million units sold, up 2.3 million from June 2009.

The Xbox 360 has now reached a 3.9 million UK installed based, which is up 1.7 million from last year. The PlayStation 3 sits at 2.2 million (up 900,000) with the PSP on 3.3 million (up only 500,000).

Despite the Nintendo DS and Nintendo Wii leading out in sales over the past 12 months it's interesting to look at data for 2009 itself.

The last data from Gfk Charttrack came on January 3rd 2009, where the total UK installed base of the current generation of consoles hit 22 million. If you look a little closer you'll notice that the Xbox 360 has sold the most units in the past six months of 2009.

The Nintendo DS had sold 8.8 million units by January 2009, meaning the 9.4 million current installed base equates to 600,000 sold this year.

The Nintendo Wii is up from 4.9 million to 5.4 million, which is 500,000 sales in 2009. The PlayStation 3 was at 1.9 million, seeing a 300,000 increase in sales and the PSP has grown from 3.2 million to 3.3 million in 2009.

However, Microsoft's Xbox 360 has grown from 3.2 million to 3.9 million, equating to an increase of 700,000 units since January 2009.

Data from January 31st 2009 put the Xbox 360 at 3.3 million and the Nintendo Wii at 5.1 million, meaning that Microsoft's console has actually sold two times the amount of the Wii in the last six-months.

When comparing to the same six month period last year, this equates to a 100 per cent rise in sales for the Xbox 360 and a 66 per cent drop in sales for the Wii. It appears that the Nintendo Wii is experiencing a drop off in the UK after the January period, with the Xbox 360's competitive price doing Microsoft proud.

The PlayStation 3 and PSP sales over the same period (January to June 2008) show no growth or decline, with the Nintendo DS experiencing 44 per cent decline, despite the launch of the DSi.

[UPDATE 13/08/09] - These numbers have since been proven to be inaccurate - Xbox 360 isn't outselling Wii in UK this year.

    • "What, this cann't be right. There are other websites that say things differnetly. You have the XBox 360 and the Wii mixed up, it is the wii that has 24 million."

    • "Silly Sally: Other websites have not looked at the data closely. All the numbers are there to see. This is for UK only and the title only refers to the last six months. The 360 has not sold 24 million in the UK, neither has the Nintendo Wii. 24 million is the total of current generation consoles sold in the country. Thanks for your comment."

    • "Just more 360 fanboyism lol.Seriously though, 360 is a great console thats for sure but do we actually have numbers for which units are selling best ? I would hazzard a guess at the arcade unit because as previously mentioned its the cheapest way to get round the prod problems. Its also sells well because people buy it to flash and use it for copied games. I love my elite and whilst I dont condon piracy I would never adopt it. I wonder what there attached rate is now ? has it nose dived since the launch of the Arcade unit ? oh well just my views. Do we think the 360 would have been as popular if microsoft had actually built in some decent anti piracy device/software ? who knows right ?"
