PlayStation 3 sales crash in Japan while the country waits for the launch of the PS3 Slim.

Consoles sales fell over 30 per cent in Japan during the week ending August 23rd.

However, Sony's PS3 was the console to feel the brunt, moving just 2,052 units compared to 5,944 a week earlier, according to Media Create.

This put the current generation console at the bottom of Japan's hardware sellers, with the Xbox 360 selling four times as much at 8,979.

The crash is expected to be due to the impending September release of Sony's announced PS3 Slim, especially since Japanese retailers have been denied regular PS3 shipments.

Japanese Hardware Sales for Week Ending August 23rd

  • DSi - 59,578
  • PSP - 27,187
  • Nintendo Wii - 26,972
  • Xbox 360 - 8,979
  • DS Lite - 5,735
  • PlayStation 2 - 3,295
  • PlayStation 3 - 2,052
