Free Xbox Live Silver play not permanent

Tuesday, 29 Jul 2008 11:01
Silver players can currently play cross-platform Live Arcade titles for free - though not for much longer
Microsoft has today said that reports suggesting cross-platform Xbox 360 games are now free to play online for Silver members are true.

However, this situation will only last for a "limited time," the company reiterated.

Last week, Microsoft said it would be scrapping the subscription set-up for Games for Windows - Live on the PC.

Since then, Silver Xbox 360 users have reported being able to play online on cross-platform games such as Lost Planet and Shadowrun.

A Microsoft spokesperson has said this free service won't last, however.

"Last week we announced that we were taking off the Gold-only restriction for multiplayer gaming over Games for Windows- Live," the spokesperson told CVG.

"For a limited time, we are offering free online multiplayer on Xbox 360/ Games for Windows titles that offer Live cross platform play. This promotion won't last, so we encourage everyone to take advantage of it while they can."

Despite it being called a "promotion," it has received virtually no publicity whatsoever, so it is more likely to be a system glitch that Microsoft are trying to pretend is a generous promotional offer ... allegedly.
