First Look - Sherlock Holmes: Nemesis

Thursday, 08 May 2008 12:25
Sherlock Holmes: Nemesis will be released at the end of May
Sherlock Holmes: Nemesis is the follow up to the dark and foreboding The Awakened, taking the deerstalker-donning detective into the realms of Lovecraftian lore.

This time around, Frogwares are pitting Baker Street’s most famous resident against the crème de la crème of French crime – Arsene Lupin.

It is certainly an intriguing mix – Lupin, of course, is the French literary response to Holmes. Like Frogwares’ other Sherlockian titles, players will control Holmes and Watson, as they decipher clues left behind by the master thief.

His desire is to humiliate the British Empire, stealing a number of items that will cause national depression and despair.

Holmes, a proud nationalist, sets out to stop him, taking in diverse locations across London, all faithfully recreated by Frogwares.

As someone familiar with the British Museum (and the gruelling steps in Russell Square tube), I can personally testify to Frogwares’ focus on getting the locations correct.

The developers are hopeful this latest entry into the adventure genre will prove just as successful as The Awakened and Silver Earring.

Graphically, it is crisp and, on higher resolutions, gorgeous in places. However, making sure to appeal to users with lower spec computers, the developers have made the conscious design not to make the game engine too taxing.

Nevertheless, Holmes fans will most likely find an interesting adventure to be had, though the voice acting can leave something to be desired, unfortunately.

Sherlock Holmes: Nemesis will be unleashed on May 30th.
