Pixar: Games lack strong narrative stories

Wednesday, 25 Jun 2008 13:40
Presumably the Wall-E game will be a narrative tour-de-force ...
Ralph Eggleston, production designer behind Pixar's upcoming movie Wall-E, has said he believes games lack the narrative stories of major motion pictures.

Speaking in the latest issue of Edge magazine, Eggelston said a radical re-think of the approach to games production is needed to address this.

"For me, the big thing lacking in videogames, and I haven't seen one that has done this for me, is how you involve a strong narrative story.

"Not just a set-up that you jump in to, but a narrative story in which the player is an active participant."

Even Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg could help, according to Eggleston.

"I think the only way this is going to work is if there's a radical re-think of the approach to making games.

"I don't know if any of these film-makers would be as interested in that part of the process, but they really have to break it down and strip it back.

"If I were them, I would want to say: 'I don't care how you make these games. This is what I want to do, here's the story I want to tell - figure out how we're going to make this."

Perhaps Mr Eggleston has been too busy working at Pixar to notice games like System Shock 2, Planescape: Torment, Metal Gear Solid or things like that.
