BioWare: Games as good as movies

Tuesday, 13 May 2008 10:37
If Mass Effect is as involving as a Hollywood blockbuster, playing Planescape: Torment is akin to watching the Godfather trilogy
BioWare chief executive, Ray Muzyka, has commented on the growing strength of computer games in the mass market, saying it is "equally satisfying to play a game like Mass Effect as it is to see the best Hollywood blockbuster."

In recent years, the popularity of gaming has grown exponentially, moving away from the cliched vision of a sad loner playing hardcore hex-based strategy games at four in the morning.

Nowadays, it is the epitome of cool to say you play Grand Theft Auto, Halo 3 or Quake Wars. Ok, this might be overstating it a tad, but the scene has definitely changed.

"It's no longer like it was 30 years ago, videogames aren't like Pong - they're a much richer experience. Mass Effect is an example of that," explained Mr Muzyka.

"It's equally satisfying to play a game like Mass Effect as it is to see the best Hollywood blockbuster. That's an exciting thing.

"Videogames have always been my hobby and I'm passionate about them and I think the fact that more and more people are playing them ... It's an amazing time ... The industry is just maturing and I think its best years are still ahead of it."
