Final Fantasy XIII doesn't render at 1080p

Final Fantasy XIII
Despite rumours and the sharpness of the visuals in the Final Fantasy XIII demo, the game will not run at full-HD.

The Final Fantasy XIII demo included with the Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete Blu-ray does not run at a 1080p resolution.

A Final Fantasy XIII fan site, FF-XIII.net, reported that Final Fantasy XIII runs at 1080p, or full-HD, despite the game actually rendering in 720p. This resolution is still considered high-definition and is the resolution most HDTV's support.

The fansite still appeared to understand that the game may not render its graphics at 1080p, though their point was not entirely clear. So to clear things up, we can confirm that the Final Fantasy XIII demo runs at 720p with 2xMSAA.

This resolution and its included anti-aliasing, which removes "jaggies" by adding an intermediary shade between polygon edge steps, still results in a very clean image. The quality of the demo's in-game graphics truly show off how great an engine Square Enix has created for the PlayStation 3 game.

Nonetheless, Final Fantasy XIII will indeed support 1080p CGI cutscenes, just like the Blu-ray standard - a mixed resolution that many games will begin to take up on the PS3. This means that the cutscenes, which cannot be rendered in real-time, will take up the majority of the Blu-ray disc space, opening questions of how many DVD's the Xbox 360 game will have to utilise.

You can find out more about Final Fantasy XIII by visiting its Gamezine game page.

  • "You guys should review other reviews a bit more thoroughly... one important thing you should do, and that is read everything! "So we are going to be able to play a game with beautiful cut scenes" Nowhere in there does it say we will be playing in 1080p. All the article says is that the CGI cutscenes, not gameplay or even the cutscenes rendered with the game engine, are the only thing running in 1080p. In the end, you have both come to the same conclusion, only you made another site seem questionable about their information. You should remove this article or at least repost it giving credit to FF-XII.net with the information found about this matter!"

  • "Thanks for your comment, but we are aware of that - hence: "The fansite still appeared to understand that the game may not render its graphics at 1080p, though their point was not entirely clear." Their title ended up in much confusion on many websites and forums, hence this article confirming the situation. Thanks again."

  • "While I think it's cool that the FMVs are at 1080P a lot of TVs briefly go black when switching resolutions and then display a message informing the user of the current resolution. That would be more irritating than a few less pixel lines"

  • "Rory: The game will be output at 1080p, meaning the screen will be receiving the same 1080p input. This is because the PlayStation 3 will upscale the 720p gameplay input to 1080p. HDTV's won't experience the issues you described for this reason. Hope that helps."

  • "Yes it do! The demo didn't suport 1080p cuse it was just a demo. The game aren't finished yet. And it will be realesed 2010, the odds are big that they're updating the resulotion. "
