Capcom Copies Mock RE5 Box Art

Friday, 19 Dec 2008 16:03
Resident Evil 5
Capcom lack inspiration and take a gamer's mock up of the Resident Evil 5 box art for their own.

The Resident Evil 5 demo will be coming to our waters sometime in the new year, but until then, all we have is a new gameplay trailer and a helping of box art to grace our computer screens.

This story is reminiscent of Capcom's release of Okami on the Nintendo Wii. Somehow the company used an image taken from video games website IGN for the games box.

Unbeknownst to Capcom, the IGN watermark was still there for all to see...classy.

So here's the official U.S. box art for the game;

Remind you of anything? Probably not, but if you go and look at this fan art website, you'll find DeathSpawn's mock art;

He posted that in June. An open and shut case really. Going to throw him some pennies Capcom?

  • "I am sorry but if the fan took the art from capcom and sandwiched the images together then there is no case for capcom stealing his box art. He used their property to do something and they are just using their property as they see fit. Now if he penned the art himself then yes they are stealing his work."

  • "Well, to be honest, game creators tend to have made the box art way way way early on. I did work experience last year at lionhead and they had already done the box art for Fable 2, so there's a chance that they had actually already done it. Besides, that picture of them back to back (well, almost) was always likely to be the box art so just because someone put it on a cover before them doesn't mean capcom copied it ffs. Besides, I actually think this 'deathspawn' vision of the box art is better than Capcoms so he should hardly be that bothered. If you remember,people were taking all of the GTA IV art and putting it on a mock up and the only thing that wasn't the same was the order that the pictures were actually in come the final retail box art. When there's only one picture to get right, like in this case, it's not hard for the two to end up so similar. "

  • "This fan used copyrighted material without express permission from Capcom. Unfortunately for DeathspawnII, Capcom is not obligated to compensate him/her for anything or even acknowledge his/her work."

  • "DeathspawnII didn't create the art for the box. He just cut & pasted it. Therefore, Capcom is free to do whatever they like with his work."

  • "Photoshopping copyright material into an image and trying to get something free for it, FTW!!"

  • "Idiots. Why would Capcom throw him ANYTHING?! Yes, here's some money for using OUR SCREENSHOTS from OUR GAME to make your own mock boxart."

  • "Haha, some money for this would be pretty nice xP
    It's pretty unlikely that they were inspired by my box though. Just a coincidence they used the same renders I did.
    Thanks though, I'm flattered. =)"

  • "Considering promo art is release by capcom at shows and other events, Did anyone ask Ds were he got art in first place?"

  • "I'm a fellow member myself at VGBA. To answer the above question, GameWallpapers.com is your answer. Although it is Capcom's artwork, this is his concept. He also provided a printable in which, Capcom could have swiftly edited, and then release. "
