New Godfather sequel details revealed

The first Godfather game was successful in sales terms, but it wasn't a great game. Will the second one be better?
Electronic Arts has released a few more details about the Godfather game sequel and how it is shaping up.

The Godfather II game will "[go] beyond the film's story," allowing players to take part in racketeering and smuggling in 1960s Florida, Cuba and New York.

Apparently, "...players expand to new cities, as they build up their families through extorting businesses, monopolising illegal crime rings and defeating new families in an effort to become the most powerful mob family in America".

One of the 'new' features is 'The Don's View' - basically, this is a pseudo-tycoon game that gives players an overview of their crime empire. Hire thugs, keep an eye on rival families, promote the thugs and so on.

The original game's 'BlackHand' control scheme has been 'refined', allowing for combo attacks, pressure tactics and executions. A pseudo-RPG element is factored into this, with a hand-picked crew coming along to assist, each with their own skills.

"In the 1960’s, a mafia Don was only as strong as his family,” said Hunter Smith, executive producer of The Godfather II.

"We found the hierarchical culture of organised crime intriguing. Running an organised crime family in a world defined by family loyalty is something that we felt could introduce a new strategic element to the genre.

"That is what the Don’s View is all about - laying out a strategy to pick off the competition one by one. The Don’s View is so unique, it could fundamentally change the rules of open-world games by blending action and strategy to create something entirely new."

The game will be coming out in February 2009, on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.
