Hideki Kamiya: Bayonetta will shake up the action genre

Bayonetta's director Hideki Kamiya has been kind enough to talk to Gamezine and tell us why Platinum Games' latest action game will redefine the genre.

In April we asked you to submit your Bayonetta questions to Platinum Games. They've come up trumps by bringing Hideki Kamiya himself to answer as many questions as he could.

Hideki Kamiya is best known for working on Devil May Cry, Viewtiful Joe and Okami. He's now offering his skills to Platinum Games' PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 action game Bayonetta.

When we asked whether Bayonetta was an evolution or revolution of the action genre, Kamiya-san replied in our exclusive interview:

"I would say it’s a bit of both, it’s an evolution because it draws inspiration from the 3D action games that have come before it, and it’s a revolution because it shakes up and redefines the genre, in our opinion."

So what is it about the game that will make it shake up action games before it? What is that Bayonetta brings to the genre that we haven't seen before?

"Innovative ideas – it’s quite a common thing that in an action game the player’s character can perform cool moves fighting against enemies. The key to making this gameplay mechanic different is in creative ideas and imagination of how to implement excitement and dynamism in the game to provide gamers with great experiences, with something new," Kamiya-san told us.

"We are doing our utmost to make Bayonetta the new benchmark in action gaming, and we hope you’ll appreciate what we’ve accomplished when you have the controller in your hands and get to play the game."

The full Bayonetta interview with Hideki Kamiya will be published at the end of this week. For more on Bayonetta please visit the its Gamezine game page.
