MW2 PC: 162 one-star reviews, 352 "boycott MW2" servers

Friday, 23 Oct 2009 12:20
Modern Warfare 2
The Modern Warfare 2 PC boycott really is picking up steam with lots of terrible pre-release reviews and server owners making their selves known.

Following Infinity Ward's announcement that the PC version of Modern Warfare 2 would not be supporting dedicated services, a first for Call of Duty, the PC community has shown their displeasure en masse.

A petition against the decision has surpassed 140,000 signatures, and now the PC community is overflowing into the rest of the internet. The PC version of the game now has 162 one-star reviews on Amazon.co.uk - which is sure to make an impact on potential purchasers.

A quick search for servers on Game-Monitor.com reveals over 330 servers with "Boycott MW2" in their title. These dedicated servers are for previous Call of Duty games, including Infinity Ward's first Modern Warfare and Treyarch's World at War.

Some how we don't think that there's going to be a resolution, since Infinity Ward sincerely believes that their new system is better for everyone. PC gamers might agree when the game is released; if they buy it that is.

Here's a video run-down of the boycott and the reasons for its existence, for those of you who might have missed something:

This isn't the first Modern Warfare 2 boycott. Many gamers are upset at Activision's decision to sell the game at £10 more than most other games on the market.

Modern Warfare 2 will release for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC on November 10th.

[UPDATE] Amazon.co.uk has now removed all user reviews of Modern Warfare 2 on PC.

 • "I agree fully with all the arguments against not having dedicated servers. Basically, I feel this is an infridgement against our "free enterprise" and a decision which is an entrance to monopolosized, end of an era for PC gamers issue. If PC gamers wanted a console, they would hace bought one. I have a few, but ultimately prefer PC's over them, despite the cost and upkeep involved. We are basically an adult, technically minded people who demand the best graphics, speed and new maps. Most of us are cabable of running our own server, it's easy and not expensive. We enjoy our clan member friends and the freedom to choose server based on rules, maps, players. I have access to over 18,000 servers on COD 5 and over 30,000 on COD 4. I am not willing to settle for one server with lag and have to pay for mod-maps, plus not having the choice of who I am playing with or the rules. This is freedom of choice. What most of us, including myself, fought for. To eliminate lecherous dictators from spreading like cancer. Most console players wont understand, but us PC gamers are a different sort. Realistic tactical games-no bunny hopping, wall hacking, aim bots, run and gun ect.We paid much $$$ for our gaming rigs and expect the multitude of choices they offer in return, ie overclocking, upgrading and maintainig so we can choose most any game or server in the world with no problem. I think the piracy issue is one of the main reasons for the change by Rob Bowling. There is something called the keycode which has been in use successfully. Pirated keycodes are not received or accepted by dedicated servers-only private servers which have no rules. We spend lot's of dollars for High Speed Internet to avoid lag and ping issues. I myself have Fios 20Mbt per sec download and am not about to settle for a high latency, only 6 player unknown server which will change everytime. Dedicated servers monitor and clean their game 24/7 (most of them) If one dislikes the rules or gameplay, we simply choose another from amongst the thousands. New mods are freely downloaded daily automatically upon entering a game. Shame on Actovision, they had a good thing going with COD 1-5 with over 100,000 sales on COD 5 which netted billions of dollars profit. They got greedy and decided to control the whole thing and charge for extra maps, plus pay a console tax on the PC!!! I have been a faithful follower since COD 1 and highly anticipated my pre-order three moths ago till the axe came down at the last minute. I like other 150,000 people sadly and angrily cancelled. Satisfied with COD 4 and 5 anyway. Enough Said"

 • "Heres a poem I wrote for the PC gamers out there :D Called: The Fall Modern Warefare 2 went down the loo; they pushed up the price, that wasnt very nice; they extended the release date, wow things are looking great; they took away our servers do they still deserve us; that was the last straw its worse than breaking the law; now we'll have steam thats our life dream; *sarcasm* a petition was signed with one thing in mind; to get our way, so maybe we'll stay; we cancelled our orders before they crossed the borders; we spammed the guy who thinks he shoulda told a lie; we've done what we can by throwing our frying pan; now we wait, until release date; will they bring us a patch, will we win the match; will it come out the loo, or stay in the poo?"
