E3: Sony disappointed by lack of FF exclusivity

Thursday, 17 Jul 2008 16:00
Final Fantasy XIII will still be a PS3 exclusive in Japan, though there are so few 360 owners there it makes little difference either way
Jack Tretton, one of the bigwigs at Sony and the guy who did most of the presentation at their mediocre keynote event, has admitted his company is disappointed about Final Fantasy XIII.

The loss of exclusivity for the game, it being confirmed for Microsoft's Xbox 360 in its keynote speech, is a blow to Sony, who are synonymous with the previous titles in the series.

Final Fantasy VII launched on the PSOne in 1997, with only the spin-off FFXI seeing a release on the 360.

Final Fantasy XIII will be the first 'proper' game in the series on current gen consoles, but Sony will have to share the game with Microsoft for the first time.

"Am I disappointed by it? Yes," Tretton admitted. "Am I surprised? No," he added, acknowledging the increasing need for third-party developers to have their games out on multiple formats to achieve profitability.

"It's going to be harder and harder to hold on to franchises," Tretton lamented. He did confirm that the game will remain a PS3 exclusive in Japan.
