Gran Turismo 5
Damage is in Gran Turismo 5, but as far as can be made out it's only for racing cars and not standard road models.
So we have a few new videos of Gran Turismo 5's damage modelling. The game is playable at GamesCom in Cologne, Germany, which
we confirmed yesterday, but Sony strangely cut the game from their conference. Perhaps they're holding back the game's release date announcement until the Tokyo Games Show.
A Japanese document has appeared on the game's official website, which appears to mention 1000 cars, with 170 premium models and 830 standard models. It is as yet unclear what the difference is, since translations have so far been a little dodgy.
60 tracks are said to be included in the game, with 20 still to be revealed. Custom soundtracks are also supported in the game from the cross media bar (XMB). The cockpit camera will be fully controllable by the player and the player's head can even be tracked by the PlayStation Eye. Yes, you read that right. Your head movements will be recreated on-screen in cock-pit view.
And so to the damage. The game will include a brand new physics simulation system, represented in full, with roll over possibly supported. Damage will be reproduced in full by real-time collision deformation, but as far as can be spotted in the following videos from Gamersyde and Gametrailers, damage will be limited to race cars, as you'll notice that the Lancer is left undamaged from a crash.
It looks like Polyphony Digital was unable to secure rights to damage for all the road cars and so felt it was best to not include it at all. Although other racing simulators include such damage, like Forza MotorSport 3, these games don't sport 1000 car models.
This has been confirmed by Kazunori Yamauchi, who
told IGN that not every car will support damage, though the list of cars that will has not yet been finalised.
In other news, to celebrate the launch of the
PSP Go, gamers who register their PSP Go's between the 1st and 10th of October will get a free digital copy of GT PSP. Yes,
free Gran Turismo on the PSP. Justified that
PSP Go price yet?
Oh and another nice little surprise for you. The 60 frames-per-second Gran Turismo on the PSP will also include a cockpit view. Polyphony Digital are gods indeed. The video is thanks to Gamekyo.
