New Gran Turismo most likely on PS2, not PC

Gran Turismo
Sony want new Gran Turismo's to be released on as many platforms as possible, but it's doubtful that they're talking about PCs.

We know that a full PlayStation 3 release of Gran Turismo 5 is coming when Polyphony Digital are finally able to finish the damned thing and we also know that the team are working on a PSP title. However, SCEA's John Koller is hinting that other platforms might be involved.

"[Polyphony Digital] report directly into our CEO, Kaz Hirai, so it’s a little bit of a 'wait and see'," Koller told Videogaming247.

"But we look for that franchise to continue on as many platforms as possible."

Koller also said something similar at this year's Game Developer's Conference, when he claimed that Sony was looking at "GT5 across all platforms, just to see what makes the most sense."

Now, there is evidence that the series might finally be coming to the PC, with Polyphony Digital's head Kazunori Yamauchi telling der Standard that "perhaps [GT5] comes to the PC" so the game can reach the Chinese market.

However, Gran Turismo has become synonymous with PlayStation, so we doubt Sony would want to separate the game from the platform. Moreover, the series has always shown off the power of Sony's consoles - making a better looking game for high-powered PCs would be counter-intuitive.

What's more likely is that along with the PSP release, Gran Turismo will once again return to the PlayStation 2 via some kind of up/down port. We've seen this with many recent PSP game announcements, including MotorStorm: Arctic Edge and Jak & Daxter: The Last Frontier.

What do you think? Is Koller hinting at a Gran Turismo PC release or simply a return to the PlayStation 2? Whatever the case, we'd just like to see the PlayStation 3's Gran Turismo 5 coming out this year or next.

  • "I don't think that Polyphony Digital goes over to the PC sector, too. Reason 1: Polyphony's success is strongly associated with the PlayStation brand. They owe them everything and were always a close confederate (?) to Sony. Reason 2: Exactly the same thing, but in the opposite direction. I don't think, that Sony or PD want to lose this tight alliance. Reason 3: The Gran Turismo series generates a lot of profit. And it's kind of save one, because Sony needs the series to satisfy their lots racing fans, who buyed their first, second and third PlaStation just to play GT. In the worst case, that PD actually runs out of money, Sony would bolster them - definitely. Reason 4: As mentioned in the article above, going double-tracked an develope for PC, too, would be like attacking one's own friend from behind. Japanese' don't do something like this - hopefully."

  • "Well they don't have many platforms of there own to release it on and its cost them a fortune to make so its possible they may spread it across others. Hey maybe they are doing a sega and testing the water to see the income by releasing it onto other platforms so they can pull out of the hardware business (as the PS3 in failing and the PSP it way behind the DS) and become a multi platform sortware company lol."
