PlayStation 2 price cut to ?100/$100

Tuesday, 31 Mar 2009 12:54
PlayStation 2
Sony Computer Entertainment has announced that the PlayStation 2's price will be cut to under ?100/$100.

This isn't quite the price cut we were expecting. We were hoping for a PlayStation 3 price cut around this time, but hopefully that will follow soon. Instead SCE has announced that the PlayStation 2 will finally drop to ?99.99/$99.99, from ?129.99/$129.99

The PlayStation 2 launched in 2000 and has sold more than 136 million units worldwide as of December 2008. It was the first video games console to reach 50 million units sold in the US and also 50 million units across Europe.

"PlayStation 2 set the industry standard for worldwide mass market adoption and is a
clear embodiment of our commitment to platforms that deliver 10-year product lifecycles," said Jack Tretton of SCEA.

"We are now into PlayStation 2's tenth year and consumer demand remains strong throughout much of our region. This RRP revision will help to ensure that PlayStation 2 remains a key part of the entertainment market place for some time to come," " said David Reeves, President and CEO of SCEE.

The price cut will be available from April 1st.
