Violent games make kids smarter? Research says yes

Friday, 30 Apr 2010 17:19
Yesterday (April 23rd) it was reported that brain training games do not make users any smarter; now a new study claims that violent shooters like the Grand Theft Auto series can enhance quick-thinking faculties and natural reflexes.

Researchers at the Netherlands' Leiden University said that far from turning the nation's youth into hardened criminals, shooters can help kids to develop the skills they need for fast-paced jobs.

Speaking to the Sun, assistant professor Dr Lorenza Colzato of Leiden University's psychology department said the ability to switch between different tasks quickly is becoming increasingly important.

She added: "If someone likes violent video games it does not mean they will engage in anti-social behaviour.

"Parents should not be scared to let their children play video games."

South Korea's government does not seem to agree with this last sentiment, after recently announcing that it is set to impose a curfew on online gaming to curb the problem of addiction in the country.
